About the TOEFL

Who needs to take the TOEFL Exam?

If you are a student studying in an English speaking country for less than four years or your previous degree was not issued from an institute in an English speaking country, you need to take the TOEFL test before filing your application.

Although in some areas, paper based TOEFL tests are still available, the internet based TOEFL test (iBT) is actually what major universities would like to receive. Now, with more than 4,300 test centers worldwide, taking the test is convenient and easy.

What does the TOEFL measure?

The TOEFL iBT measures how well you read, listen, speak and write in English and use these skills together in the university classroom. For example, you might read a passage or listen to a lecture, and then write or speak about what you learned.

The TOEFL iBT measures skills in reading, listening, speaking and writing, and requires you to combine 2 or more of these skills to respond to a question. For example, you might read a passage or listen to a lecture in English, and then write or speak your answers in English.

What is considered a good score?

Most universities have minimum scores for iBT requirement and that would be 80 in total. Some school might have specific requirement in individual sections, for example, 20 in each section to fulfill the requirement. For top 20 universities, we would recommend a 100 in iBT to be your target scores.
